Home -- History
Mitchell got his start building homes for families on the South side of San Antonio but quickly moved up to larger custom homes and commercial projects. In 1926 Mitchell built his first school in Floresville Texas and in 1929, he successfully completed a large estate for the Atkinson family (known today as the McNay Art Museum). G.W. Mitchell General Contractor survived the Great Depression and moved primarily into commercial construction during World War II.
By the mid 1980's, G.W. Mitchell had passed away, two of the three second generation Mitchell's had retired and a third generation of Mitchell's had joined the firm. Today, Melvin Mitchell and three of the G.W. Mitchell's grandchildren, Bill, Lane and Andy Mitchell, run the company that their grandfather founded so many decades ago. While G.W. Mitchell & Sons is still a closely held, family run company, it has been and continues to be blessed by a number of loyal and very talented employees. Two sisters (Kathy Harms and Lorraine Lackey), who each have been with Mitchell in excess of 40 years, still run the front office. There are a number of employees and former employees in the field and the office who have been with Mitchell for decades and some who are 3rd generation as well
